You Gotta Try Playing a Twelve String Guitar

July 20, 2010 No Comments

Have you ever considered trying to play a twelve string guitar? If your knowledge is restricted to the six string variety, you owe it to yourself to give the 12 string guitar a try. It’s not as difficult as it sounds, because the biggest difference is that your finger is placed over two strings instead of one.

The resonance created by the 12 string guitar can be appreciated by anyone who likes a full ringing sound, which can almost give the sense of two guitars being played. Twelve string electric guitars have been used in rock music for years. Some rock musicians use a double-necked guitar to have the choice between a six string or a twelve string without changing instruments.

A unique characteristic of the 12 string guitar is that the higher octave G string is in fact higher pitched than the high E strings, and it’s out in the middle of the strings. This is one of the reasons you’ll get a bell-like ringing sound, even when you’re just strumming. If you are already familiar with playing a standard guitar, you really should give playing a twelve string guitar a try.
