The 7 string guitar usually features two G strings, one of which is tuned an octave higher than the other. This additional G string provides the guitar an actual ring to its sound.

The twelve string guitar is a more common type. The 12 string guitar duplicates all the strings with the lower four pairs differ only by an octave.
